Sleep disturbance is commonly experienced by people with MND which adds to the burden of disease for both the person concerned and their carer.
Disrupted sleep can be caused by physical symptoms, such as muscle cramps, pain, reduced mobility, spasticity, mucus retention, and restless legs syndrome. Depression and anxiety may also lead to insomnia.
The timely introduction and use of mechanical ventilation is one of the most significant therapeutic measures available to prolong life span in people with MND.
Anyone with MND who is experiencing sleep disturbance should discuss this with their treating doctor and have it investigated in order to identify the cause and any measures that can be taken to improve or stabilise quality of life.
